AI discoverability for websites: how to get found by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI

Published:

Abstract representation of a website being analyzed by AI systems

Key takeaways: Traditional SEO is no longer sufficient. AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude increasingly determine which businesses get recommended to potential customers. This article describes concrete optimizations to help your website get found, cited and recommended by AI, from technical adjustments to content strategy.

Why AI discoverability is now essential

AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite only a handful of sources per answer, making the gap between being found and not being found larger than ever. Businesses that optimize for AI discoverability now build a competitive advantage that's hard to catch up on while the market is still young and competition low.

The difference from traditional SEO is fundamental. With Google, everything revolves around rankings, positions 1 through 10. With AI search engines, it's about being cited as the authority. There is no page 2. You're mentioned, or you don't exist.

This means businesses that optimize their website for AI discoverability now are building an enormous competitive advantage. The market is still young, competition is low, and the gap between being found and not being found is larger than ever.

1. Structured data: speak AI's language

JSON-LD schema markup is the most important technical optimization for AI discoverability, because it gives AI systems a complete picture of who you are, what you do, and for whom in milliseconds. Implement at minimum Organization, Service, FAQPage, and Article schemas.

What you should implement at minimum

  • Organization schema: your company name, description, logo, address, founding date and social profile links. This is how AI learns to recognize your business as an entity.
  • Service schema: for each service you offer, with description, service area and provider. AI uses this to match your business to specific search queries.
  • FAQPage schema: on every page with frequently asked questions. This is directly consumed by AI to generate answers.
  • Article/BlogPosting schema: on knowledge base and blog pages, with author, publication date and last modified date. AI weighs recency heavily.
  • BreadcrumbList schema: for your site hierarchy and structure, so AI can follow it.
  • LocalBusiness schema: with full address, geo coordinates and opening hours. Essential for local AI queries.

Why this works

AI systems have limited time to analyze your website. Structured data gives them a complete picture of who you are, what you do and for whom in milliseconds. Without schema markup, AI has to draw its own conclusions from loose text, and that often goes wrong.

2. Content that AI wants to cite

AI systems preferentially cite content that opens with a direct summary, contains declarative sentences with concrete figures, and follows the question-answer pattern. Pages with comparison tables and source citations are cited above average.

The inverted pyramid

Start every page and section with a clear summary. Give the answer first, then the supporting evidence. AI systems preferentially extract the first 1-2 paragraphs from a page. If your conclusion is buried at the bottom, it probably won't be cited.

Write in clear, declarative sentences

Avoid vague language. Instead of "We help companies with their digital challenges" write "Stratalytic builds custom web applications, dashboards and e-commerce platforms for SMEs in the Netherlands." AI cites specific, factual statements.

Use the question-answer pattern

Structure your content as questions with direct answers, even outside of an FAQ section. This perfectly matches how people ask questions to AI.

Example:

"How much does a custom website cost?" A professional custom website typically costs between €5,000 and €25,000, depending on complexity, number of pages and integrations. E-commerce platforms with payment and inventory system integrations are typically more expensive.

Use numbers and sources

AI systems strongly prefer content with concrete figures and source citations. "According to CBS research, 43% of Dutch businesses now use AI tools" is more likely to be cited than a vague claim without a source.

Comparison content scores high

Pages that compare two solutions side by side ("WordPress vs. custom: which fits your business?") are cited above average by AI. Use comparison tables, AI extracts tabular data very reliably.

3. Technical accessibility for AI crawlers

Your robots.txt must explicitly allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and other AI crawlers, your content must be server-side rendered, and your TTFB must stay under 500ms. If AI crawlers are blocked or your server responds too slowly, you simply don't exist for that AI.

robots.txt: let AI bots in

Many websites unintentionally block AI crawlers. Make sure your robots.txt explicitly allows the following bots:

  • GPTBot and ChatGPT-User, OpenAI/ChatGPT
  • Google-Extended: Google Gemini
  • ClaudeBot and anthropic-ai, Anthropic/Claude
  • PerplexityBot: Perplexity
  • Meta-ExternalAgent: Meta AI
  • Bytespider: ByteDance/TikTok AI

llms.txt: your business card for AI

An emerging standard is the llms.txt file, similar to robots.txt, but for providing context rather than controlling access. In it, you describe in Markdown format who you are, what your key pages are and how you'd like to be cited. Early adoption shows improvements in how accurately AI writes about your business.

Server-side rendering is mandatory

AI crawlers often don't execute JavaScript. Content that only appears after loading via JavaScript may never be indexed. Ensure all important content is directly in the HTML through server-side rendering (SSR) or static site generation (SSG).

Speed matters for AI too

AI crawlers have timeout limits. If your server takes longer than 500 milliseconds to respond, your page may be skipped. Optimize your Time to First Byte (TTFB).

4. Authority and citation signals

AI systems cite websites with strong authority signals: a consistent online entity, mentions on respected platforms (even without hyperlinks), original research with unique data, and detailed author bios with demonstrated expertise. These signals outweigh traditional backlinks.

Build your entity

Ensure your business has a consistent online presence with the same name, description and logo across all platforms. Use the sameAs field in your Organization schema to link all official profiles. The more consistent your digital footprint, the better AI recognizes you as a reliable entity.

Mentions outweigh links

Unlike traditional SEO where backlinks are the most important signal, AI systems also learn from text mentions without links. A mention of your company in a respected trade publication, on a government website or in an industry directory counts, even without a hyperlink.

Invest in original research

Publish unique data, benchmarks or insights that can't be found anywhere else. If your website is the only source for a specific fact or figure, AI is forced to cite you.

Author pages with expertise

Add detailed author bios to your content, linked to LinkedIn profiles and area of expertise. AI systems evaluate author expertise as part of their trustworthiness assessment.

5. Optimize for conversational search queries

Optimize your content for complete natural language questions, not just loose keywords. Systematically answer the 7 question types (who, what, when, where, why, how, how much) for your core topics, and provide 40-60 word answers directly after each question heading.

Target natural language patterns

Don't just optimize for "custom website costs" but also for "How much does it cost to have a custom website built for my business?" Use these complete questions as headings in your content.

Answer the 7 question types

Create content that systematically answers "who", "what", "when", "where", "why", "how" and "how much" for your core topics. This covers the vast majority of questions asked to AI.

The ideal answer format

AI systems prefer answers of 40-60 words that appear directly after a question heading. For step-by-step processes, the "step 1, step 2, step 3" format works best. For comparisons, a table works. Match your content format to the type of question.

6. Multilingual content as competitive advantage

Dutch-language AI queries have significantly less competition than English ones, making bilingual content in both Dutch and English with correct hreflang tags an immediate way to expand your reach. By offering your content in both Dutch and English with correct hreflang tags, you expand your reach in both languages.

AI systems respect language preferences. When someone asks in Dutch "Welk bureau bouwt goede websites?" your Dutch content is prioritized over English-language competitors.

Summary: the 10 most important action points

  1. Add an llms.txt file: low barrier, immediate effect on AI comprehension of your site
  2. Update your robots.txt: ensure AI bots are explicitly allowed
  3. Implement comprehensive JSON-LD schemas: at minimum Organization, Service and FAQPage
  4. Restructure content in question-answer format: aligns with AI search patterns
  5. Start every page with a direct summary: AI extracts the first paragraphs
  6. Ensure server-side rendering: AI crawlers often don't execute JavaScript
  7. Create definition content for core concepts: "What is [X]?" pages are frequently cited
  8. Build your online entity: consistent presence across all platforms
  9. Publish in Dutch and English: less competition in Dutch
  10. Monitor your AI citations: regularly check what ChatGPT and Perplexity say about you
