The CMR waybill is the legal transport document for international road freight. The Netherlands has ratified the e-CMR protocol, making digital waybills legally valid, and the EU eFTI regulation pushes authorities to accept digital freight information. Mandatory? Not yet. Inevitable? Yes.
For most carriers the practical question is not "when do we switch to e-CMR" but "what do we do with the thousands of paper and PDF CMRs flowing through our administration today".

FAQ
No, e-CMR is not yet mandatory in the Netherlands, but it is legally valid: the Netherlands ratified the e-CMR protocol. Through the eFTI regulation, the EU is moving towards authorities having to accept digital freight documents. Paper CMRs remain valid for now, but the direction is clearly digital.
Two tracks. Track 1: use e-CMR, the waybill is created and signed digitally via an e-CMR platform. Track 2 (where most of the gain sits for existing flows): have the CMRs, PODs and freight documents that arrive as scans, photos or PDFs read automatically by AI and matched to the right shipment in your TMS. Both tracks can coexist.
Yes. Modern AI models read skewed photos, carbon copies and handwritten additions such as licence plates, seal numbers and quantities. Uncertain fields get a low confidence score and go to a review screen, quality stays guaranteed while the bulk is processed automatically.
Potentially an entire damage claim. Insurers reject claims when document data does not match, a seal number retyped as 'MSCX-9988 NL' instead of 'MSC-X-9988-NL' is enough. Hidden damage must also be reported in writing within 7 days of delivery; time lost fixing entry errors can cost that deadline. Automated processing removes the retyping error from the chain.
